With an infinite selection of mascaras to choose from, mascara purchasing can be a perplexing decision for some. The some I’m referring to is those who are on their makeup game and actually care enough about which one to buy. They’re not walking into CVS blindly approaching the Almay section, choosing the first mascara they see, not caring if its brown or black. Those who aren’t interested probably don’t have fun with their eye make up choices at all and are walking around Penn Station wearing neon leggings with stiff cotton dresses from Ross.
One of the factors in making your decision, is deciding on which look you’re trying to achieve. There are many different types of mascaras; ones that are for longer lashes, thicker lashes, fuller lashes, curls them, makes them voluminous, colors them, extends them… etc. Whether I’m going for the ‘innocent Au Pair in Central Park’ or the ‘girl by the docks’ look, I generally use the same one all around because I always want my lashes (just my lashes) to be dark, fuller and longer.
I’ve tried countless brands and types of mascaras, and these are my four favorite to date:
This is what I’m currently using: MAC ZOOM LASH ($14) mascara in Zoom black. I love it because it has a super dark pigment, lifts and lengthens your lashes and gives off a doll-eyed look. What is great about it is that you can really build up the density and drama per coat, so you can take it from daytime to nighttime depending on how much you put on. It’s very inky and wet, so it can be a little messy, but nothing you can’t clean up with a q-tip. You also have to be careful when layering it because it can tend to clump a little, but if you do two even coats, and then wait a second for it to dry and then add a third, it will thicken up to look like your wearing false lashes. And it’s the lower lash mascara to wear.
Diorshow BLACKOUT ($25) is an ideal mascara for a glam look, with it’s ultra-black kohl pigment. Diorshow makes a regular mascara that is fantastic, but I prefer BLACKOUT because I like that it has a kohl pigment, which really makes your eyes pop more than just a standard black color. It lengthens, separates and curls lashes for the perfect dramatic faux-lashes look.
I learned about this mascara from one of my girlfriends (shout-out to Miss Liza Martin), Covergirl Professional Super Thick Lash mascara is perfect for lengthening and thickening your lashes at a great price. It makes your lashes fuller without clumping, doesn’t smudge, and reaches all of your little lashes without a problem. So…a high-impact mascara for under $5? Fiiiiiiiine.
L’Oreal Voluminous Millions of Lashes mascara is great for seperating and defining lashes in a very pretty way. The brush has a multitude of bristles, which gives a fanned-out multiplied lash effect and coats each lash evenly from root to tip. It doesn’t flake or smudge and for under $10 why wouldn’t you want a million lashes? Peep the skill below from when I used it…
